Fly record falls and freestyle tied win at NSW State Age

Lillie McPherson Jade Mayne 100m Butterfly Record

The Mighty Blues were fresh and ready to go on night three of the 2022/23 NSW Senior State Age Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.

Taper week has certainly been paying off in the pool for swimmers like Lachlan Davies (Warringah Aquatic) who began last night’s session with a new PB of 59.87 in the Boys 13-14 Yrs 100m Backstroke, which earned him top honours as Swimmer of the Night for a second time these championships.

“My race plan was to go out with Victor (Strokin) and come back really strong. It’s a new PB for me – finally hit sub-60, so I’m feeling good.”

City of Sydney’s Victor Strokin touched the wall in 1:00.64 to claim the silver medal ahead of Joseph Kim (Knox Pymble 1:00.78).

Manly’s Lillie McPherson is back to bring down more NSW butterfly records this year, and last night she started with the NSW Girls 14 Years 100m Fly. McPherson swam a massive PB and toppled the standing record in 1:01.07, celebrating in a moving display of comradeship with SOPAC’s Jade Mayne (silver medallist 1:04.40). Barker Aquatic’s Milla Lawrence pulled in the bronze medal in 1:06.09.

The boy from Albury North Lavington, Oscar Kreutzberger, is certainly making his name known these championships, last night claiming the top spot on the podium no less than three times.

Kreutzberger began Monday night’s program with the Boys 15 Years 100m Butterfly claiming gold in a thrilling race with Cash Milner (Kincumber Pacific Dolphins 58.08) and Lachlan Thompson (Orange Aquatic 58.30).

Later in the evening Kreutzberger kept up the pace and went on to win gold in the Boys 15 Years 50m Breaststroke (30.54), and Boys 15 Years 200m Freestyle (1:53.88).

The atmosphere was electric during the splash and dash Girls 15 Years and Boys 16 Years 50m Freestyle events!

It was an especially tight field in the Girls 15 years event, with competitors edging each other along. Cruiz’s Chloe Douglas-Byrne 26.20 got her hand on the wall first in 26.64, closely followed by Warringah Aquatic’s Dominique Melbourn (26.64) and Nelson Bay’s Ebony Nix (26.69).

It’s clear Marcus Da Silva has found his stride at Cranbrook Aquatic. He delivered a sizzling performance in the Boys 16 Years 50m Freestyle, claiming gold in 23.42 just ahead of James Gauci (SOPAC 23.51) and Koby Bujak-Upton (Knox Pymble 23.71).

Junior Pan Pacs medalist and dual 2022 NSW State Age Swimmer of the Night, Olivia Wunsch (Carlile) is back in the golden seat this week, taking out first place in the Girls 16 Years 200m Freestyle in 2:02.56, pushed along by contender Dijana Mazumdar (Barker Aquatic 2:05.63).

Swimming Auckland’s Eva Allan shared the second spot on the podium with Mazumdar in 2:05.35, with third place going to Aya Milton (Wests Illawarra Aquatic 2:07.68).

The Men’s 200m Freestyle line up was stacked across all age groups.

Lachlan Cole (Wests Illawarra Aquatic) and Charlie Gray (Revesby Workers) tied for the win in 1:55.57 in a dramatic race to the wall. Newington’s Jackson Mccleery brought home third in 1:56.18.

Wagga Wagga’s engine Jamie Mooney led his competitors in the 18 Years event and claimed gold in 1:52.74. Gabriel Wilczak (Trinity Grammar) touched in 1:54.91 for the silver, followed by Jason Yeou (Carlile 1:55.45).

An impressive line-up took over the starting blocks in the Men’s 19 Years & Over event, featuring NSW Touring Team members James Koch (Sydney Uni), Gabriel Gorgas (Knox Pymble), Thomas Hay (Sydney Uni) and Ryan Wilkes (Sydney Uni) fresh off their success in America, along with competitors Wesley Roberts (SOPAC) and NUSwim’s Marcus West.

Koch marked the sizzling finish of the race in 1:49.10, followed closely by Roberts (1:49.95) and Gorgas (1:50.42).

Jessica Cole’s dabble in the 200m butterfly is paying dividends. The Wests Illawarra competitor claimed a glorious gold in the Girls 15 Years event in 2:16.09, having only raced the event twice previously. SOPAC’s Rafaela Kopellou took 3 seconds off her Heats time to earn second place in 2:18.82, followed by Isabelle Hanger (City of Sydney 2:22.63).

The State Age action continues on day 4 with Heats from 9am and Finals from 5:30pm.
