Breaststrokers back on the scene in night four finals

13 December 2022
Kreutzberger State Age

It was a fast and furious start to the night at Tuesday’s finals session, competitors in the 16 Years and Over 50m Freestyle events leading the charge.

Carlile’s Olivia Wunsch was golden in the Girls 16 Years event, touching the wall agonisingly close to the NSW Record in 25.32. This is the second time these championships Wunsch has nudged a NSW Record, but there are still three nights of finals to go!

Knox Pymble’s Bella Zhang has been consistently delivering the goods this week. Zhang claimed the silver medal in 26.27, ahead of steady contender Dijana Mazumdar (Barker Aquatic 26.67).

Regional swimmers reigned on the podium in the Girls 17 Years event. Wests Illawarra Aquatic teammates Jaimie De Lutiis and Chelsea Jones went first and third in the 17 Years event in 25.99 and 26.64 respectively, with Sophie Mayes (Alstonville 26.54) rounding out the podium.

In the corresponding men’s event, Tane Bidois and Kai Lilienthal claimed gold and silver for Knox Pymble in the 17 Years category, followed by bronze medallist Gabriel Jeffery (NUswim 23.74).

Jamie Mooney (Wagga Wagga) has bagged himself another gold these championships, in the Men’s 18 Years 50m Free event (23.40), followed by Will McDonagh (Knox Pymble 23.60) and Haig Buckingham (SOPAC 23.63).

The 19 Yrs & Over boys set a blistering pace in their final, Zach Maher (Carlile 23.00), Vanya Kamenjas (SOPAC 23.21) and Thomas Robinson (Cruiz 23.23) battling it out to the wall.

ACU Blacktown’s Tim Hodge has delivered another ripper of a swim after his sub-World Record race earlier this week, this time in the 400m Freestyle MC. Hodge got his hand on the wall in 4:18.78, taking a whopping 10 seconds off his Heats time in the 17 Years & Over category. This got Tim the gold, ahead of Paralympic bronze medallist Alexander Tuckfield (SLC Aquadot 4:19.01) and Johan Briedenhann (Revesby Workers 5:17.80).

13-year-old Jack Gibson has been putting in the work at Dapto SC, coming through with the win in the 12-14 Years category in 5:00.27 – a full 7 seconds faster than his Heats time. Knox Pymble’s Liam Togher took second place in 5:43.74, followed by Jayden Van Stralen (Picton 5:37.86).

Commonwealth Games teammates Ella Jones (Kincumber Pacific Dolphins) and Jade Lucy (SLC Aquadot) were back on the scene last night in the Women’s 17 Yrs & Over 400m Freestyle MC, taking out first and second place in 5:12.44 and 4:51.65 respectively. Alstonville’s McKinley Arnison put up a tough fight to claim third in 5:06.32.

It was a finals session for the breaststrokers on Tuesday night. We witnessed superb performances across all distances, and particularly in the 100m event, where our Swimmer of the Night emerged.

Haig Buckingham (SOPAC) has put up a repeat performance, named Swimmer of the Night for the second year in a row for his result in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke (1:02.05) – this time in the 18 Years category.

18-year-old Buckingham has resurfaced after the HSC and saw State Age as an opportunity to benchmark his performance as he starts to contemplate life after high school. Buckingham has a positive mindset and is looking to the future.

“I’ve recently changes coaches to Adam Kable’s NSWIS squad. It’s been a smooth transition and good training ahead of State.”

“I was pretty happy (with my race). Coming off the HSC, this meet was about seeing where I’m at and where I can go to.”

Junior Pan Pacs Australian Team member Alistair Gorgijovski (Wests Illawarra Aquatic) took out the silver medal in a quick 1:04.37, followed by Sydney Uni’s Thomas Oates in 1:05.03.

SOPAC’s Isabella Johnson swam a skillful race in the Girls 16 Years Breaststroke event, earning herself the gold medal in 1:10.73, followed by Bella Zhang (Knox Pymble 1:11.77) and Kyla Brown (Kinross Wolaroi 1:12.84).

Cruiz SC athletes are firmly establishing a place for themselves in elite racing. We’ve found them at the top of the podium consistently at State Age and the Girls 100m Breaststroke was no exception. Bianca Fuller took gold in the 17 Years event in 1:12.65, keeping the spot warm for teammate Emily Nobbs who carried the torch in the 18 Years & Over event, winning the race in 1:09.51.

Hunter’s Isabella Campbell put up a tough race for Fuller in the Girls 17 Years event and touched a fingernail behind Fuller to claim the silver medal in 1:12.66. Melissa Cowen (V- Swimming Auckland 1:12.72) shared the third spot on the podium with Lily Mccowan (Tivoli 1:13.41).

The New Zealand contingent has been an excellent compliment to the program this year at State Age – contributing quality international racing experience for NSW athletes. Swimming Auckland’s  Rebecca Wilkins claimed the silver visitor’s medal in the Girls 18 Years & Over event in 1:13.49, along with second place NSW medallist, Emily Maythers (Revesby Workers 1:15.68). Warringah’s Nadine Neimanis brought home the bronze in 1:16.66.

Dual swimmer of the night Lachlan Davies (Warringah Aquatic) has come to NSW Senior State Age hungry for the win. Last night the 14-year-old took down the Boys 14 Years NSW Record in the 50m butterfly in a new time of 25.89. It was a speedy field for the 13-14 year old boys, with Hayden Mcgregor (Kincumber Pacific Dolphins) touching for silver in 26.69, followed by Shanuk Wickremaratchy (NUswim) in 26.84.

The State Age action continues on day 5 with Heats from 9am and Finals from 5:30pm.
