Freestyle showdown at NSW State Champs

16 March 2019

As day two got started at the Sydney Olympic Pool for the NSW State Open Championships the energy was palpable. The much-anticipated showdown for the Men’s 200m Freestyle and the Women’s 50m Freestyle will be the races to watch tonight.

The 200m Freestyle will have the pool overflowing with Dolphins with Elijah Winnington (Bond), Mack Horton (Melbourne Vicentre), Cam McEvoy (TSS Aquatic), Thomas Fraser-Holmes (Griffith University), Alex Graham (Bond) and Kyle Chalmers (Marion) all diving in trying to take home the gold.

Cate and Bronte Campbell (Knox Pymble) will be representing NSW in the final of the Women’s 50m Freestyle, going up against Holly Barratt (Rockingham) and Marion swimmers Madi Wilson and Brittany Elmslie all battling it out for a spot on the podium.

In what’s already proven great competition practice for the younger competitors vying to compete at the 2019 Hancock Prospecting Australian Age Swimming Championships in Adelaide, the final of the Women’s 100m Butterfly will see the young guns shine.

Coming fresh off their success at Round 1 of the World Para Swimming Series in Melbourne, brothers Jason, Nathan S12 and Braedan S13, both representing USC Spartans, will square off in the Men’s 400m Freestyle Multi-Class.

With the Backstroke leg of the National Event Camps set to kick off tomorrow the Women’s 100m event tonight will mark the start of a long week of training for the likes of Barratt, Wilson, Kaylee McKeown (USC Spartans) and Sian Whittaker (Melbourne Vicentre).

Whilst the Men’s 200m event will see Tristian Hollard (Southport Olympic), Jorden Merrilees (Melbourne Vicentre) and Brad Woodward (Mingara) vying for the podium before heading off to Brisbane for some intensive backstroke training from Brisbane Grammar coach David Lush.

Tonight’s 4x200m Freestyle club relays will close out day two of competition.

Finals kick off at 6:00pm tonight, stay tuned to @nswswimming on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for all the action. For live results head here.
