With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to Thekla Samuel AOM, (8/02/1930 - 4/08/2023) a true pioneer and revered Life Member of Swimming NSW, who illuminated the world of swimming with her dedication and compassion. Born on February 8, 1930, Thekla's journey encompassed remarkable achievements and deep connections that forever changed the landscape of swimming in New South Wales.

At just 17 years old, Thekla displayed incredible courage and compassion when she performed a life-saving resuscitation on a three-year-old child. This pivotal moment ignited her commitment to becoming a swimming instructor, driven by a desire to empower others with lifesaving skills. Her altruism and dedication set her on a path that would shape the lives of countless individuals.

Hailing from Tasmania, Thekla's aquatic journey began with her representation of the state in swimming and diving. Her dedication to her craft, coupled with the profound impact of voluntary instructors who supported her ascent to the national level, inspired her to share her expertise with others. "When I was swimming, all my coaches were voluntary," she once remarked, a testament to the importance of mentorship and community.

Thekla's move to New South Wales in 1960 marked the beginning of her transformative influence in the region's swimming landscape. She was a driving force in the establishment of the Eastwood-Epping Swimming Club, serving as its first Chairman and creating a nurturing space for swimmers of all ages. Her commitment to fostering young talents and advocating for water safety was unwavering throughout her tenure as Chief Instructor from 1961 to 2002.

Beyond the club, Thekla's impact radiated throughout Swimming NSW. Her service as Secretary and later as Chairman of the Learn to Swim Committee from 1974 to 2005 elevated swim education in the region. Her unwavering dedication led to her induction into the esteemed Life Member of Swimming NSW in 1998, a recognition of her indelible mark on the sport.

In 2001, at the age of 71, Thekla's outstanding contributions were further recognized as she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (AOM), a testament to her enduring commitment to swim education and water safety.

As we bid farewell to Thekla Samuel AOM, her legacy remains a beacon of inspiration. Her courage, dedication, and compassion have left an indelible mark on the lives of those she touched. Swimming NSW mourns the loss of a true visionary, while also celebrating the profound impact she has made on the sport and the community.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Thekla's family and loved ones during this time of grief. May her memory serve as a guiding light, inspiring generations to come. Funeral arrangements will be shared with the community shortly, allowing us to come together to honor and celebrate Thekla's remarkable life.
