Swimming NSW is delighted to welcome James Hickman to the team in the newly created Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer role.

Mr Hickman was an elite swimmer who competed for Great Britain at three Olympic Games, earning international titles and breaking world records in butterfly events over 10 years. After retiring from competition, he turned his focus to the commercial side of the sport, which included establishing a media marketing company that led the FINA Manchester 2008 World Swimming Championships.

More recently, James has guided the global sponsorship and marketing activities for Speedo Australia as the company’s Global Sponsorship Manager and Head of Marketing.

Swimming NSW CEO Kirsten Thomson OLY highlighted that Mr Hickman’s involvement in the sport over many years, which spanned from grassroots and recreational swimming to the pinnacle of the sport, will bring unique perspectives and experiences to support the next phase of operations for Swimming NSW.

“I am thrilled to welcome James to the SNSW team at such an exciting time for our sport. James brings a wealth of swimming and commercial experience that will be a great asset as we strive to deliver upon our 2022-2032 Strategic Plan. As a sport, we must transition from our traditional revenue model, create new opportunities for growth, and deliver value to our members,” said Ms Thomson.

“I look forward to working with James to create new opportunities for our sport, providing the swimming community within NSW access to innovative events and products that will support our vision to become the number one state for performance and participation.”

Mr Hickman said he was excited about the appointment and looked forward to contributing to the goals of the organisation and helping to strengthen participation in the sport into the future.

“I hope to be able to make a positive impact in the growth and development of the sport. If we can create meaningful and fulfilling experiences for athletes, coaches, officials, and the broader swimming community alongside the rest of the team at Swimming NSW we will grow,” said Mr Hickman.

Mr Hickman will commence his new role on 8 June 2023.
