Mighty Blues Shine at 2023 Open Water Flippers Camp

03 March 2023

Five of NSW's most talented Open Water athletes and coaches are on the Sunshine Coast undertaking a four-day National Open Water Flippers Camp, alongside some of the country's most promising up-and-coming athletes. The camp, which is taking place 2 - 5 March and run by Swimming Australia, is a valuable learning opportunity for the next wave of talent in open water swimming, particularly leading into the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to be held next year.

Australian Junior Open Water World Championships representative Caleb Dryer (Trinity Grammar), SNSW Open Water Target Squad member Euan Liney (Knox Pymble), and emerging athletes Daniel Carter (The Hills) and Samuel Higgs (Warringah Aquatic), as well as coach Cameron Gledhill (Warringah Aquatic), have all been selected to attend the camp based on their results at the recent Australian Open Water Championships in January.

With over 35 km of training in open water environments, these athletes will be able to refine their open water swimming skills, including how to train and compete in the 10km event.

Under the leadership of Trudee Stafford (QLD) and Mel Tantrum (WA), the camp will also provide an immersive experience that is different from the swimmers' daily training environments in the pool and will help to better equip coaches with the best training and racing practices in open water environments.
