Sydney, 17th August - The swimming community is mourning the loss of a true legend as Swimming NSW announces the passing of John Devitt, a renowned figure in the world of sports and a celebrated swimming icon. Devitt's remarkable achievements in the pool and his lasting contributions to the sporting world have left an indelible mark that will be cherished for generations to come.

A two-time Olympic gold medalist, John Devitt's journey to greatness began at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he clinched his first gold medal as part of the Australian 4x200m freestyle relay team. His exceptional talent and dedication were evident as he also secured a silver medal in the 100m freestyle at the same Games. Devitt's success story continued to unfold at the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he once again stood atop the podium, this time as the individual Olympic champion in the 100m freestyle event.

Devitt's dominance extended far beyond the Olympic stage. Throughout his illustrious career, he shattered an astonishing 14 world records, solidifying his reputation as a true force to be reckoned with in the world of swimming. His impact went beyond the pool, as he later became an integral part of the Australian Olympic Committee's executive team. Devitt's efforts played a pivotal role in securing the 2000 Olympics for Sydney, a milestone event that showcased Australia's sporting prowess on a global stage.

In 2006, Devitt assumed the role of Australian chef de mission for the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne.
