Australian Swim Trials 2024 – Days 1 & 2 Wrap

12 June 2024
Written by: Jon Shaw

The sun is shining here at the Sleeman Complex, Brisbane where the 2024 Australian Olympic & Paralympic Trials are being held from June 10-15.

In the pool and there has been plenty of action. In the Olympic qualifying events the standouts for NSW from the first two days would be Bradley Woodward (Mingara – NSWIS HUB – Coach Adam Kable) and Sienna Toohey (Albury – Coach Wayne Gould). Brad just missed the automatic qualifying time when he placed 2nd in the 100m Backstroke in a time of 53.53 just 0.32 shy of the qualifying time. He still has the 200m Backstroke to come later in the week.

Sienna showed plenty of fight and maturity beyond her years when clocking a new PB of 1:07.01 in the final of the W 100m Breaststroke. She just missed the coveted first place by 0.11 coming in third…what a swim! She raced the first 50m in a PB time of 31.01 then fought all the way to record the fastest 100m Breaststroke swim for a 15 year old in Australian history breaking Liesel Jones’s 24 year old Australian and Australian All Comers record…congratulations to both Sienna and coach Wayne!

The Paralympic swimmers need to post a time in the heat or the final that is faster than the Swimming Australia Qualifying Time to nominated for selection to the Paralympic Association team for Paris.

On day 1 Chloe Osborn S7 (ACU Blacktown – Coach Misha Payne) swam 5:22.06 in the W 400m Freestyle, the time was inside the qualifying time of 5:26.14 for her S7 category.

Then on the second day her team mate Timothy Hodge S9 swam a time of 1:00.00 in the M 100m Butterfly, which was also inside the qualifying standard of 1:01.39 for his category. Then putting together a fantastic swim in her final, Jasmine Greenwood (Cruiz – SA Para HUB – Coach Marty Roberts) excelled in the W 100m Butterfly to post a Paris qualifying time of 1:07.68.

All the action is on Channel 9 with heats commencing at 11:00am with finals starting at 7:30pm…both would be different for a lot of the competing swimmers – not to mention the “B” finals starting around 9:20pm…as one swimmer said to me ‘that’s way past my bedtime’.
