The Regional Development Project Camp was a concept born from Chris Myers, our regional coaching director, whose determination was to support both our Regional Athletes and Coaches. The camp is not part of the Performance Pathway, but rather a development project for swimmers from Regional NSW that just missed out on selection into our pathway squads.

It’s focus and aim is to provide athletes with opportunities. Opportunities to work with technology that may not be available in their home programs, opportunities to improve their skills and most importantly opportunities to come together and develop new friendships with other regional athletes.

10 male and 10 female athletes were selected from their Age National results. Athletes that narrowly missed selection into the Performance Pathway Squads were given the opportunity and named as part of the team and their coaches were invited along too. This camp provided not only the athletes an opportunity to grow, but our regional coaches too. Our coaches came from varying programs, and their different experiences meant there were opportunities to learn but also develop some connections.

Over the course of four days spent at the AIS, our team engaged in underwater filming, enhanced their skills through pool sessions, and had the chance to explore Canberra, immersing themselves in both training and local experiences. This dual approach provided a well-rounded experience for the team.  A team favourite was definitely the Swim League where it is still being debated as to which team came out on top!

A big thank you to all of the athletes that took part in this opportunity, it was an amazing experience because of your enthusiasm. A huge thank you to our coaches, who volunteered their time and experience to support our regional athletes. And finally, a MASSIVE thank you to our Regional Coaching Director, Chris Myers for the incredible work you do in supporting our regional programs, coaches and athletes.

Coach Renee Pickvance summed up the experience "I had a fantastic time and learned a lot. The other coaches were great to work with and were really easy to get along with. I thought the camp overall was great and well structured, all the kids were great and keen to learn. I’m sure all the kids took a lot away from the camp, I know Leah and Millie had a ball and made lots of new friends."
