2019 Australian World Championship Team Trials: The Mighty Blues Wrap

9-14 June - Brisbane Aquatic Centre

Once again, the Australian Team Trials proved to be a tough assignment for all competitors with demanding qualifying times listed the pressure was certainly on both athletes and coaches. The times set were from the 2017 World Championships with the 8th fastest time from the heats (time that made the final).

A total of 43 swimmers represented NSW competing in the 28 events on offer – no 50m form strokes. The format for the trials was simple – top 8 swims from the morning heats made the finals at night. If there were 24 swimmers or more then “B” final spots were on offer. To make the team there were 2 spots per event provided both swimmers went under the qualifying time.

There were some amazing swims from our NSW athletes including Matthew Wilson (SOPAC – Coach Adam Kable – NSWIS Hub Coach) in the 200m Breaststroke – ahead of the world record for most of the race! Cate Campbell (Knox Pymble – Coach Simon Cusack – Northern Hub) putting together a very strong 100m Freestyle – her splits were 25.44 & 26.68 (1.24 sec drop off). The Australian Team for the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay looks special with 3 swimmers under 53 secs and the 4th just over – what a team! This team will include Bronte Campbell (3rd in the 100m Freestyle) who produced something special in the 50m to finish just behind her sister in a time of 24.17 (0.05 faster than her entry time) that gained her an individual event swim. Bradley Woodward (Mingara - Coach Adam Kable – Hub Program) put together great swims in the 100m & 200m Backstroke to gain selection.

It was great to see Meg Bailey (Hunter – Coach Adam Kable – NSWIS Hub Coach) swimming back in Australia after her time studying in the US – I’m sure there are great improvements that will come through over the next 12 months for her in both the 200M & 400m IM. Some of our NSW swimmers already on teams were on show including William Yang (Sydney University – Coach Bobby Hurley) and James Traiforos (Trinity Grammar - Coach Adam Kable – NSWIS Hub Coach) who will be competing at the World University Games in Napoli, Italy in July…Will made 2 finals coming second in the 100m Backstroke – just missing the Q time. Also, Charli Brown (Manly SC – Coach Justin Rothwell) who is on the Australian Team for the World Junior Championships making her first Open long course finals in the 200 & 400 IM. It was great to observe Se-Bom Lee (Carlile – Misha Payne) swimming strongly and making the final in the 200m & 400m IM finishing 6th & 5th respectively – he will also be swimming at the Junior World Championships. Edward Marks (Carlile - Coach Adam Kable – NSWIS Hub Coach) also produced 2 swims faster than his entry times in the 100m & 200m Butterfly – his 52.98 in the 100m was his first swim under 53 secs – a great effort.

Congratulations to the 4 NSW swimmers who gained selection on the 2019 Australian Team for the World Championships:

  • Cate Campbell (Knox Pymble – Coach Simon Cusack – Northern Hub)
  • Bronte Campbell (Knox Pymble – Coach Simon Cusack – Northern Hub)
  • Matthew Wilson (SOPAC – Coach Adam Kable – NSWIS Hub Coach)
  • Bradley Woodward (Mingara – Coach Adam Kable – NSWIS Hub Coach)

Congratulations to Coach Simon Cusack and Coach Adam Kable who also gained selection to the Australian Team – job well done!
