Swimming NSW Celebrates Success at the 2025 NSW Community Sports Awards

01 July 2025

Swimming NSW proudly congratulates two outstanding members of our swimming community, Murray Smith and Mary Patricia Lusty (Pat), who were honoured at the 2025 NSW Community Sports Awards. Their recognition reflects decades of exceptional service, leadership, and passion for our sport at every level.

Murray Smith – Official of the Year

Murray Smith was named Official of the Year, recognising his excellence and leadership as one of Australia's most accomplished swimming officials. Based in the Wollongong Shire, Murray consistently officiates at state and national level events, including the 2024 Olympic Trials and 2025 Swimming Australia Open Championships, where he served in senior officiating roles.

In 2024, Murray achieved World Aquatics international referee status, leading to his selection for major global events like the World Championships in Budapest and the World Para Series in Fuji, Japan. His experience and professionalism on the international stage continue to benefit the NSW swimming community through knowledge sharing and mentorship.

At home, Murray plays a critical role as a member of the Swimming Australia Technical Committee, where he helps shape the future of officiating across the country. He mentors numerous up-and-coming officials across NSW, investing in their development both in and beyond the pool deck.

Reflecting on the award, Murray said: “It was a great night at the NSW Sports Awards. Very honoured to receive such an award amongst great company. Thanks to everyone I have worked with over many years, especially my close friend and mentor, NSW Official Faye Lewis.”

Mary Patricia Lusty (Pat) – Distinguished Long Service to the Sport

Pat - 2025 NSW Community Sports Awards

Mary Patricia Lusty (Pat) was recognised for Distinguished Long Service to the Sport—a fitting honour for someone whose contributions span over six decades. A founding member of Peakhurst Amateur Swimming Club, Pat has played an integral role since its establishment in 1960 and remains actively involved today.

Pat’s legacy includes helping to fund and establish the Club’s home pool, serving 15 years as President, and supporting generations of swimmers, families, and volunteers. She has led programs that promote water safety and inclusion—most notably a free weekly learn-to-swim program that has run for more than 35 years. The initiative continues to benefit children with disabilities and those from multicultural backgrounds.

Through her mentorship, Pat has helped young swimmers achieve Bronze Medallions, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and gain employment in swim instruction and coaching. Her leadership, kindness, and commitment have left a lasting mark on her community.

Recognising All Finalists

Swimming NSW also celebrates Orange Aquatic Swimming Club, a finalist for Community Club of the Year, and Mark Lake, a finalist in the Administrator of the Year category.

Toni McCauley, President of Orange Aquatic, said:

“In my eyes we have won just to be nominated. Our club is thriving, and we are so grateful SNSW nominated us. It’s a big thing just to be a finalist.”
