2019 Hancock Prospecting Australian Age Swimming Championships: The NSW Blues Wrap Day 6
In an exciting last night of finals in Adelaide NSW swimmers stood up when everything was on the line. In the first event of the night, Girls 15-16 years 800m Freestyle, Jessica Madden (SLC Aquadot – Coach Gavin Stewart) had the chance to swim herself onto the Junior Worlds Team…talk about a little pressure! She needed to be in the top 2 of the event plus post a fast time. Jessica took on the challenge and swam an 8.61 sec PB to win the Silver medal in a time of 8:45.00…a time that was fast enough to get a plane ticket to the Junior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary!
Not to be outdone Angus McDonald (Trinity Grammar – Coach Matthew Brown) also had a final chance to swim onto the Australian Junior Team in the Boys 17 years 100m Freestyle. Also in the race were Stuart Swinburn (Uni NSW – Coach Bruce Vyvyan) and Alex Quach (Auburn – Coach Clinton Camilleri). In an exciting finish NSW swimmers went 1-2-3… a Gold medal for Angus and a time fast enough to qualify for the team. Stuart came 2nd in a new PB but fell agonisingly short of the time necessary (0:00.14)…awesome effort. Alex, who had already qualified for the team in the 200m Butterfly also swam a new PB to pick up the Bronze medal. 1-2-3-NSW!
The other Gold medal of the night went to Collette Lyons (Kinross Wolaroi – Coach Tim Taylor) winning the 13 years 400m IM in a new State Record time of 4:54.39… a new PB by 9.03 seconds and just outside the Australian Record for the event. This took Collette’s medal tally to 7… 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze…an incredible achievement at this level!
Amazing 6 days of competition and all our NSW swimmers and coaches must be congratulated on their efforts in one of the hardest age competitions in the World. I’ll be sending out more stats but to finish off with a entry time to final time of over 70% conversion is very good.
