Champion swimmer Jade Lucy has just been named Women’s captain of the Australian team that will compete at the INAS Global Games in Brisbane in this October.
“I am very happy and thrilled to be named captain,” said Jade, excitedly adding “that it is a real honour and I always wanted to be a leader for our team.”
“Men’s captain Archie Graham sent me a note congratulating me, which was very nice, so we can lead Australia together.”
Jade, who trains with the NSW SLC Aquadot squad, is one of Australia’s most successful swimmers in the S14 category blitzing the field at the last INAS Swimming Championships in 2017 grabbing five gold, a silver and a bronze medal in the pool. She has also recently returned from the World Para Swimming Championships, held last month in London, with a credible 13th placing in the S14 200m Freestyle.
“The winner was Valeriia Shabalina from Russia and I think she might be coming to the Global Games, so I will have another chance to race her and hopefully push her hard,” says Jade. The Engadine 22 year old will contest four freestyle events including the 200m up to the 1500m.
But it is swimming in front of a home crowd with her mother and a tribe of cousins that really motivates Jade. “Mum has seen me swim but it will be great to see all my cousins cheering me on in the Chandler pool in Brisbane. My cousin Jackson has watched me on TV but he will be cheering loudly for me from the crowd in Brisbane.”
The INAS Global Games for elite athletes with an intellectual impairment will be held in Brisbane with over 1000 athletes from 48 countries contesting 10 sports in 8 venues over the 8 days of sporting excitement.
