Press Release
More than 550 of the State’s top regional swimmers are set to converge on Charlestown Swim Centre this month for the 2024 Country Regional Championships.
Held 21-22 January, the event will feature some of Australia’s most promising young stars of the pool.
Swimming NSW CEO Kirsten Thomson said the Championships provided a platform for country swimmers to compete and hone their skills.
“They also act as a pathway to qualify for the prestigious 2024 NSW Country Championships held in February,” she said.
Swimming NSW will partner with Lake Macquarie City Council and Charlestown Swimming Club to host the weekend.
Adam Waite President of Charlestown Swimming Club said “We will have competitors coming from all over country NSW including Tamworth/New England, western NSW and the far north coast. Our furthest competitor is coming from Gympie, Qld’
Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the event was a windfall for the city, with hundreds of athletes and their families creating flow-on benefits for local tourism operators, accommodation providers and other businesses.
“We’re looking forward to a really successful weekend both in and out of the pool,” Cr Fraser said.
“It’s wonderful Lake Mac has been selected to host this event and I know everyone will welcome competitors with open arms.”
“I’d encourage everyone heading here for the weekend to get out and enjoy everything our city has to offer.”
While attending the event, competitors and their families will be able to drop into the Lake Mac Festival or even catch the Australian Deaf Games both also on during the same period.
Charlestown is one of three regional centres hosting this year’s Championships, with Orange and Wagga Wagga the other two locations.
