2022 Australian Age Championships Wrap – The Mighty Blues Stand Tall

What an amazing 6 days of competition we witnessed at the the 2022 Australian Age Championships held at the South Australian Aquatic & Leisure Centre where we saw the Mighty Blues NSW swimmers go head to head with other States in what is regarded as one of the toughest Age Championships in the World!

There were so many highlights, and NSW swimmers put the other States on notice when they won the first two events (Girls 16yrs and Boys 17yrs 100m Freestyle). There was also the very exciting finish that saw two NSW swimmers tie for Gold in the Girls 16yrs 200m Butterfly - both dipping under the 2:10 mark and under the Junior Pan Pac team Qualifying Time! We also had another eight NSW swimmers swim under the Junior Pan Pac team time but we must wait until after the trials to receive confirmation as there are still some swimmers to compete.

Medalists and Finalists

There were so many great swims from all NSW swimmers but following are the final statistics:

The total individual medal count was: 31 GOLD, 43 SILVER & 36 BRONZE = 110 medals…amazing!
To put this in perspective, in 2021 we had our best Age since 2013. In 2022 we won an extra 12 GOLD!

Congratulations to all the above GOLD medalists and new 2022 Australian Age Champions and their respective coaches. Also, on top of the medalists we had another 266 final swims that placed from 4th – 10th showing the depth we are developing within the State.

Relay Performance

NSW also picked up some medals in the Club Relays:

• Warringah – Boys 14-15yrs 4x50m Medley Relay – GOLD
• Knox Pymble – Boys 16-17yrs 4x50m Freestyle Relay – SILVER
• West Illawarra – Girls 13-16yrs 4x100m Freestyle Relay – SILVER
• Knox Pymble – Girls 13-14yrs 4x50m Freestyle Relay – SILVER
• Knox Pymble – Girls 13-14yrs 4x50m Medley Relay – BRONZE
• West Illawarra – Girls 15-16yrs 4x50m Medley Relay – BRONZE
• SOPAC – Boys 14-17yrs 4x100m Freestyle Relay – BRONZE
• Knox Pymble – Boys 14-15yrs 4x50m Freestyle Relay – BRONZE

This year Swimming Australia reintroduced the State Relays - State v’s State with 4 x 50m Freestyle & 4 x 50m Mixed Medley Relays. The Mighty Blues were the dominant State winning GOLD in 5 of the 8 relays plus 2 x Silver & 1 x Bronze medals!

Club Point Score

A big thank you to Swimming NSW & asctaNSW for supplying our NSW Coaches with a Mighty Blues Polo shirt that we all wore at the first session of the meet and the evening sessions when the State relays were on. There is nothing like the Blue wall making a statement of support for our clubs and State teams.

Congratulations to all our Mighty Blues NSW swimmers who competed at the highest level; as we know Age swimming is just a part of your journey: learn from what you did well, work on what you can do better and acknowledge what didn’t work so well.

We now we move onto the Australian Championship and Trials that start on Wednesday 18th May in Adelaide. We would like to wish all the Mighty Blues NSW swimmers and their coaches all the best in their final preparations, and we are very excited to see them race!
