Body image concerns are a widespread issue that exist in higher rates in athletes and can have a significant negative impact on mental health. This is particularly prominent in young people and has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns. All athletes may be affected, but research shows that women and girls, and particularly those in aesthetically focused sports such as swimming, are vulnerable. Developing body confidence in adolescence can act as a buffer for mental illness and eating disorder development across the lifespan.
In the Swim Confident Program we propose to embed positive body image and wellbeing education across multiple levels, state-wide, to achieve positive mental health outcomes for the general population of Swimming NSW members.
A key part of this program involves empowering coaches and club officials to embed the Body Confident Collective Sport Guidelines through a webinar that covers information about body image, utilising supportive language in relation to bodies, weight and shape, and mechanisms for early identification of food and body image concerns.
Dr Zali Yager and Dr Georgie Buckley from the Body Confident Collective will lead this engaging webinar - register now!
